About War Memorial Gardens
A scenic 25-minute riverside walk from Stoneybatter across the Liffey brings you to the War Memorial Gardens in Islandbridge, a masterpiece of Edwardian design by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Commissioned in 1931 to honour 49,400 Irish Great War dead, these 52 acres along the Liffey are a symphony of symmetry: rose gardens, herbaceous borders, and granite bookrooms inscribed with names. For Stoneybatter residents, it's our southern green anchor, especially poignant with Kilmainham Gaol nearby.
Formal lawns sweep to the water's edge, where rowers glide past willow-draped banks. Spring tulips dazzle, summer pergolas drip wisteria, and the air fills with box hedges' earthy scent.
What to Expect
Italianate terraces, wildflower meadows, playground, and cafe. Paths suit all, with Liffey views for contemplation. Hosts classical concerts in summer.
