About Balscadden Bay

Nothing beats a bracing dip at Balscadden Bay, Howth's hidden gem for sea swimmers and beach loungers among the best things to do in Howth. Tucked beneath the cliffs off the Cliff Path Loop, this sandy cove on the east Howth Head boasts clear turquoise waters, caves at low tide, and a backdrop of grassy dunes. Locals call it 'Red Rock Beach' for the rusty hues in the cliffs; it's been a swimming spot since Victorian times, with hardy year-round dippers braving the chilly Atlantic (around 12-15C in summer). The bay shelves gently, ideal for kids paddling, and you'll find sea glass, shells, and occasional dolphins offshore. Accessible via steps from Balscadden Road or the cliff trail, it's quieter than nearby Dollymount Strand.

What to Expect

A small arc of golden sand (100m wide), changing huts nearby, and space for picnics. Swims last 10-20 minutes max without a wetsuit; lifeguards in peak summer. Views encompass the Cliff Walk above and Ireland's Eye. Free, dog-friendly off-season, and perfect post-hike refresh.

Insider Tips

Time for high tide to avoid seaweed; join the Howth Sealswim group for guided dips. Pack a towel and thermos of tea. Sunset swims in June are magical with cliff shadows. Less touristy than Forty Foot, it's authentic Dublin coastal culture at its finest.
