About Newman House

On St Stephen's Green near Grafton Street's end, Newman House (numbers 85-86) is Ireland's finest surviving Georgian residence, built 1760s with later Regency additions. Home to UCD founders and Cardinal John Henry Newman, who established the Catholic University here in 1854; James Joyce studied within these walls. Lavish Rococo plasterwork by Michael Stapleton adorns ceilings with mythological scenes; the dining room hosted literary greats.
